I’ve never been a huge fan of bread (although I find the smell of fresh bread irresistible). I always gravitated to other “bready” things such as arepas made of corn which are a staple in Colombia.
Once I started eating paleo of course, bread was completely out of my diet and I didn’t miss it a bit. Then I became interested in fermented foods and learnt about sourdough which I had never had before and I was intrigued. It took me a long time to find real sourdough in Colombia. Once I did, I tried it and loved it but I was following a paleo diet in order to keep my skin clear so I didn’t repurchase it.
Lately I get a lot of questions about what I’m actually eating now that I have quit the paleo diet. My answer is some grains and legumes. Not all of them though.
Yesterday I went to my local farmer’s market and surprise surprise they started selling organic sourdough bread yesterday. It was warm and it smelled amazing, so I got a couple of loaves.
I have enjoyed eating that amazing bread. It doesn’t bloat me, it completely agrees with me. It’s made with nice, organic ingredients and it tastes really good. The thing is that what is most important to me when it comes to diet, is getting a lot of nutrients, so it’s about nourishing my body.
So even though I’m enjoying the bread I got yesterday very much, I don’t plan to make it a part of my diet, simply because bread is not the most nutritious food around. I would rather eat those calories accompanied by some lovely nutrients. This is not just the case with bread. I also feel that way about corn and white potatoes.
I’ll enjoy having them once in a while, but I prefer eating other more nutritious foods like sweet potatoes, quinoa, chickpeas, etc.
How do you feel about bread?
