Something I enjoy a lot is making beauty products at home by mixing different natural and gentle ingredients. Jonathan has very sensitive skin and after he shaves his face, his skin can become irritated and red. The shaving foam he uses is one by Nivea and although it smells very nice, the ingredients that make it smell nice are also the ones that are very irritating for his skin such as menthol, alcohol, perfume, etc.
After doing a lot of research online, I kept finding recipes made mostly with shea butter and coconut oil which are ingredients I truly love for moisturising the skin and I happen to have quite a bit of those at home.
I put together a cream by melting same parts of shea butter and coconut oil. Once they melted on very low heat and took them off the heat and added an equal part of olive oil and about 1/4 cup of pure aloe vera gel which we we grow in the garden. Aloe vera is a very soothing ingredient which I love using on my skin as a face mask. Combine everything well and place it in the fridge until it starts to become solid. At this point I take it out and blend it using a hand blender until it becomes thick with a soufflé consistency. I store it in a clean glass jar and that’s it!
It is very different from what you get in the store, think of it as a body butter for shaving. It does soften the skin and hair for shaving and leaves the skin moisturised and soft without creating irritation, but if you are used to the feeling of shaving foam, then it is very different. Jonathan liked it very much and his face was not red at the end.
I do not use essential oils because although they are natural, they are irritating for the skin. Unscented is always best!
