In last previous video I talked about going against my own advice when it comes to skincare and ended up using too many things on my face so that I ended up getting a really bad episode of rosacea.
I’ve had some rosacea in the last years which developed through the use of very harsh products to treat my acne. I never paid much attention to it because it was never very visible or uncomfortable. But, last month my skin had had enough and it became extremely red and hot, it was so uncomfortable. I had never experienced that before and I knew immediately that it was my fault for fussing with my skin in the first place.
The main thing was to check my diet, I eat very low carb so I knew inflammation in the gut or in the body was not the reason, also I had not made any changes in my diet recently but what I did was to actually remove the sweet potato, yam and fruit that I have sometimes. The reason for this is that sugar increases inflammation and rosacea is related to inflammation. This applies to acne too, the lower glycemic the diet is, the better it is for the skin to heal.
Coffee, chocolate, spicy foods, wheat, dairy, sugar, fruit, honey and all forms of sugar no matter how natural they are can all make rosacea worse. Tomatoes, bell peppers, eggplants and potatoes can do this too. It’s important to remove as many of those foods as possible to see if there is improvement, you might be eating things that make rosacea worse and you don’t even know.
Sun exposure as well as very cold or very high temperatures can worsen rosacea and ironically, most sunscreens do too (if your skin feels like it is burning when you apply sunscreen or any product, it’s probably not a good idea to keep using it). I have stopped using sunscreen and have noticed it helped too but i still protect my face with hats and staying out of the sun.
Makeup products can seem harmless but most of them are full of irritating ingredients. Nit wearing makeup will definitely help. Essential oils are better to avoid them because they can be irritating, while unscented face products are always best. As for commercial products marketed for rosacea, they are usually full of mineral oil and silicones which trick you into thinking the skin feels smooth but in reality you are just covering the pores and absorbing a petroleum based product.
Skin with rosacea is skin that needs very minimal and gentle care. The less you touch the face, the better it is and even water can be a bad offender since it dries the skin so much. Lots of moisture is very important. So, I started using my homemade tallow cream which is very rich and thick and makes my skin feel very soothed when I apply it. If you can go for days without washing your face, not even using water, you will see a huge improvement on the look of the skin. This is what I;m doing at the moment, but at night and in the morning I apply a tiny bit of the tallow cream on dry places.
All these tips are helpful for when you are doing everything right with your diet. However, if you are eating a lot of fast food, lots of sugar, sodas, alcohol, carbohydrates in general and inflammatory fats such as canola, soy and sunflower oil you may not notice much of an improvement.
Rosacea is associated with gut problems. Health starts in the gut and it’s very important to address diet before anything else. A diet high in healthy fats from plant and animal sources with healthy protein, lots of green veggies as well as fermented foods and plenty of water will dramatically help rosacea. Hormonal imbalances are another culprit but addressing your diet will have a positive effect on hormones too.
And lastly, stress is the major cause of rosacea. We are all very stressed nowadays but it is important to find ways to manage our stress levels and to do our best to get some really good sleep every night.
Most of all, remember that rosacea can definitely be kept under control. Of course the earlier you make changes, the better it is since it can get worse if left untreated. Here is the full recipe for my tallow based cream:
